Phil Keoghan gets new hosting gig; The Amazing Race 32 still coming

CBS

CBS is extending its relationship with Phil Keoghan, and that means going beyond just his gig on The Amazing Race.

Today (via Deadline), the network greenlit a ten-episode competition series hosted by Keoghan entitled Tough as Nails, one set to showcase “real people who are real tough in real life as a result of their physically demanding, everyday jobs.” Here is a little bit more information per the logline:

Contestants will be tested for their strength, endurance, agility and mental toughness in challenges that take place in the real world. One by one, they will be eliminated until a winner is named.

Keoghan is set to executive-producer the series alongside his wife and producer partner Louise; there is no precise premiere date for the show just yet, but it could launch at some point in 2020.

In a new statement, here is some of what Phil had to say about this project, and how he was inspired to take part:

Tough as Nails was inspired by my proud, working class family of farmers, gold miners, builders and coalminers … I was lucky enough to spend my school holidays working alongside my grandfather, an A-grade mechanic, World War II aero mechanic, gunsmith and inventor. I’m excited to celebrate the skills of those who sweat on factory floors instead of gym floors, and those who wear work boots instead of workout shoes.”

Is The Amazing Race 32 still happening?

The short answer is yes, though there is no specific premiere date for it following its run earlier this year. This show has become the ultimate utility player for CBS, as it can be plugged in almost anywhere to generate good ratings. Given some of the network’s early-season struggles — new drama All Rise is off to a disappointing start and many returning series are down — we wouldn’t be shocked if we saw the Race kick off at some point before May sweeps come to a close. Yet, their midseason lineup could determine that more so than anything else.
