The Conners season 2 premiere promo: Becky gives birth!
Let’s start with the great news, as in the premiere you’re going to see Becky welcome her new baby. This is a happy, joyous occasion — or at least one that feels like it will be. You get a joke in here about what the family lacks in quantity, they make up for in volume. Translation? There are a lot of Conners, all of them dysfunctional.
While The Conners as a show may be a comedy, we do also know that it’s one that focuses on real issues and doesn’t tend to sugarcoat things. With that in mind, showrunner Bruce Helford confirms to TVLine that Becky’s baby is going to be born premature:
“The baby is going to be born prematurely … Becky is already worried about her capabilities as a mom, and the [premature birth] triggers all kinds of guilt, because she was drinking when she first got pregnant — when she didn’t know she was pregnant.”
Clearly, Becky wasn’t doing anything intentional to hurt the baby, but she’s going to be struggling with a lot in the immediate aftermath of them coming into the world. Also, go ahead and add to this the fact that she could end up being in some ways a single mother, given that the baby’s father in Emilio was deported at the end of season 1 and there’s no clear indication that he will be able to come back from Mexico. He could offer some support, but it may have to come from afar.
Knowing The Conners, we’re sure that a number of people are all going to come together in order to rally for Becky. There’s probably a realization here that she will need them and these people, no matter their differences, are there for each other. They are also there for cynicism and plenty of laughs, not that this should come as much of a surprise at all. This is the DNA of the show!
Season 2 of The Conners premieres on Tuesday, September 24 on ABC.
