Queen of the South season 4 finale: Who returned from the past?

The Queen of the South season 4 finale has now officially come and gone on USA, and what it brought with it was some serious drama. And, to go along with that, one especially notable blast from the past.

So who arrived from past seasons of the hit USA series? Think along the lines of James! Peter Gadiot turned up at the conclusion of the season and with that, set the course for something exciting to be coming up next time around.

So how did this come about? Speaking in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, show executive producer Ben Lobato made it clear that this was a return that was not always 100% in the cards for the hit USA series:

“We wanted James to be in season 4, but Peter had some other things that he wanted to explore creatively, so he went off and did that … What that was done, he came back around and told us he was available. We decided to get him back in and set him up for season 5 and let’s go. Things weren’t completely planned out this way, it was something that happened through the season. We’re so grateful that it did, and we’re so happy to have him back.”

As for Gadiot himself, he is happy to come back and dive into whatever is coming up next, per the aforementioned website:

“It was so great to hear about how much the fans missed James … I’m really so grateful that they love the character so much. For me, since I spent so much time on that set and in that world, it felt just like jumping back on a bike — very natural. As an actor, I’ve always been interested in finding the opposite color from what’s on the page. From the very beginning, this character could’ve been this one-dimensional kind of tough guy. But I was always looking to explore what was his psychological journey. Where is his humanity? What are his regrets? What are his hopes? Throughout the seasons, we peel away all some of these things.”

Because of the news that Queen of the South has been renewed officially for another season now, we don’t have to worry about the long-term future. Instead, we can relax a little bit waiting for the new season … though we’re also not sure that “relax” is the right way in order to describe all of our emotions entering what’s left in the game, either.
