As we prepare for tonight’s season 4 finale of Queen of the South, there is one thing that you should know — you are still going to get a chance to see more of the show coming up!
Today, USA renewed the drama officially for a season 5, and the timing couldn’t be more perfect. Now, there’s nothing that you need to be worried about as you get closer to the finale tonight since there is another season on the horizon. This is a show that the network does still have a lot of faith in, and also that they want to keep developing over the course of the months to come.
While we were long confident in the ability of Queen of the South to stick around for another batch of episodes, we’ve also known for some time that its future was far from secure. This season averaged a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic for live viewings and then add to that just more than 900,000 viewers. While we wouldn’t consider these numbers to be 100% terrible by any means, you do have to raise an eyebrow any time that you see declines. The good news is that this show does almost certainly generate strong DVR viewership (most summer cable shows do) and there will be a chance for viewers to catch up before season 5 airs. More than likely, it will be back again next summer — this is the optimal time to air a show like this, one where it doesn’t have to deal with anywhere near the sort of competition that it would during a standard TV season.
So could season 5 be the final season of Queen of the South? While it’s certainly possible, we would consider it somewhat of a surprise. Typically, what we’ve found over the years when it comes to USA shows is that they like to run them at least through a season 7, if not longer. Suits is ending in season 9, whereas Monk and Psych both ended in season 8. It’s possible that Queen of the South could end earlier than some of these shows since it’s much more serialized, but we like to think that we’ll get a season 6.
