American Horror Story: 1984 trailer: Camp Redwood, Mr. Jingles, & chaos
So what do we want from a trailer for this show more than anything else? It starts with great scares, and the trailer seems to have those in abundance. In general, we think that the American Horror Story franchise is always best suited if the word “Horror” is mentioned … and such seems to be the case here.
Insofar as the story goes, superficially it is full of camp horror-movie cliches. Camp Redwood (the site of most of this season) is a place with a legacy of terrible things happening around it. Yet, you have young people venturing there for either the sense of adventure or thinking that most of the rumors are hooey … and while there, they find themselves in a situation that is so far beyond what they imagine. Of course, it also just so happens that the camp is close to a mental institution, one where a particularly dangerous patient in Mr. Jingles recently escaped from. (What is it about this franchise giving horrific people innocent names? First, it was Twisty the Clown; now, it’s Mr. Jingles.) If you’ve ever played the video game Until Dawn this is basically a television version of this – group of young people go to a cabin in the woods after mysterious deaths happened there and there’s a mental institution near by as well.
Through this upcoming season, we’ll see these people try to survive camp, and maybe get to know each other along the way. A number of franchise veterans, including Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, and former Twisty the Clown actor John Carroll Lynch, will be on board. Meanwhile, Olympian Gus Kenworthy is a part of the cast alongside Glee alum Matthew Morrison, reuniting with Murphy after so many years. This is a show that is offering a slight reinvention to the franchise, mostly given how this is the first season without Evan Peters and one that will only feature a small role for Sarah Paulson, busy with some other Murphy projects.
