Supergirl season 5: Michael Rosenbaum denies rumors of return
Following reports that came out recently suggesting that he could be a part of the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, Rosenbaum (famed for playing Lex Luthor on Smallville) took to Twitter to deny the conversation. He also asked Jon Cryer if he knew something more — but it doesn’t appear to be so. (Cryer is coming back as the Supergirl version of Lex for the crossover — that information has been out there for a while.)
Should the Supergirl producers want to bring Rosenbaum back in some capacity? Absolutely, but Smallville is still so recent that we would caution the writers against casting him in the same exact role. Back when Stephen Amell was brought on for Arrow, for example, he had to endure a lot of conversation suggesting that he was never going to live up to Justin Hartley. Tyler Hoechlin has already faced comparisons aplenty to Tom Welling, who was the famed star of Supergirl for so many years. (Brandon Routh is bringing his version of Superman to Crisis, but because he’s already a part of the Arrowverse and his version of the character isn’t as recent, we don’t think that it is anywhere near as big of a deal.)
Crisis On Infinite Earths is airing this December/January and it already feels jam-packed — we haven’t even written in this article about some of the other people who were recently signed up to take part. Sooner or later, this is going to have so many characters that nobody is going to be able to keep track of what’s going on. We’d rather have Rosenbaum, if he’s available and interested, back for a more meaningful arc at some point down the road. He deserves a chance to shine a little bit more than a small appearance, especially in a different part.
