Outlander: Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe talk 5-year premiere anniversary

Today (August 9) is a more important day than most when it comes to Outlander. After all, it marks a commemoration like no other! Today is the five-year anniversary of the series premiere airing on Starz, where it immediately found a following among both book readers and new fans alike. It’s since gone on to be one of the most successful series in the history of Starz — it draws millions upon millions of weekly viewers, it has a fanbase all over the world, and also one of the most giving, charitable audiences out of any show on TV.

There is a lot to celebrate today, and Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe are both here in order to help you do it! In the video, you can see the two actors paying honor to the five-year anniversary. They talk (presumably from the set of season 5) about some of what they remember from so many years ago and their memories of joining the show. It was such a different time then — neither Sam nor Caitriona were household names prior to Outlander, and they had this responsibility of trying to usher in this big show not knowing what it would end up meaning to people.

What they’ve since learned over time is how much viewers care about Jamie and Claire Fraser, how much they appreciate the rich narrative of the story, and how loyal these fans are. They’ll endure long Droughtlanders, including the one we’re on currently, in order to see their beloved show again. (Season 5 is reportedly set to premiere at some point in 2020.) Sam and Caitriona are also now producers, which gives them even more input on the overall direction of the story.

Here’s to many more years of Outlander! We know that there’s at least one more season after season 5, so the show will run until 2021 at the earliest. Maybe, if we’re truly lucky, we will see it make it to a ten-year anniversary.
