Snowfall renewed; season 4 will premiere on FX in 2020
“Snowfall has continued its creative leap forward this season with the hard work and contributions of John Singleton and the brilliant performance of Damson Idris … We are grateful to Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Michael London, Trevor Engelson and Walter Mosley for honoring John’s legacy through their commitment to building on the artistic excellence of Snowfall with a fourth season on FX.”
Snowfall is currently just a handful of episodes into its third season and the first following the death of Singleton earlier this year. To date, the season is averaging a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and a little bit under 800,000 live viewers. While these numbers are down slightly from where the show was during its third season on the air, they don’t represent anything super-troublesome for FX or anything that they should freak out about. Snowfall has actually had some really good retention from one season to the next, which is one of the reasons why we are here with a season 4 renewal … and it’s also pretty outstanding entertainment!
The reason why Snowfall works is that it does a great job of marrying two different genres that are successful in their own right — period drama and crime saga. It’s succeeded in bringing you the both of them in a way where each feels compelling and authentic. One doesn’t dominate the other. You’re seeing the motivations of why Franklin started the drug empire that he did, including the strains of the time and the rise of crack in Los Angeles. Yet, you’re also seeing how his motivations change and how power can impact and corrupt those around him.
Snowfall season 4 will premiere in 2020 — there’s no confirmation of a premiere date just yet, but odds are, you’re going to get a chance to see it again in the summer. This is what worked for the first three season, so why mess with what works?
