No Jane the Virgin spin-off being planned (for now) after finale

The series finale for Jane the Virgin aired earlier this week on The CW, and while there was at one point a spin-off idea out there, it’s not going anywhere. Jane the Novela was considered by the network this past spring, and they decided not to move forward with it.

With that project dead, is there a chance that the network will move forward with another? It’s fair to think about it and wonder, but it doesn’t look as though it is something that is in the cards — at least for the time being. In speaking about this subject further in a new interview with TVLine, executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman made it clear that, for now, she’s fine to let the series finale speak for itself:

“Not really right now … I’m really so happy with having an ending and being able to come to a conclusion. You never know what’ll happen in the future, but I’m really happy to sort of put Jane to bed and tuck it in, wish it a nice sleep, and move to new things.

“I’m really grateful that I had a chance to tell this story, and that we, as writers, got a chance to end it when we felt like the story was ending, and I feel like that’s a great place to leave it.”

Given how satisfying much of the Jane the Virgin series finale was to so many characters, there’s also no real need for more of a direct spin-off. The reason why Jane the Novela would have worked was because it was somewhat separate from the main show and fairly meta. Each season was meant to be a separate “book” written by Jane and the story would be narrated by Gina Rodriguez. It would be a fun, anthology sort of storytelling that kept the lighthearted tone of the original show. Because we know how some of the stories end up — heck, we even know that an older Mateo is the narrator on Jane the Virgin — there are fewer cracks to fill in.
