Is Beecham House renewed for season 2, canceled at ITV?
Let’s kick off this article with a dose of facts — for the time being, there is no official word one way or another on Beecham House and where things are going to go from here. The first season has presented some excellent drama, a beautiful setting, and a series that has a serious amount of Downton Abbey / Poldark vibes.
Unfortunately, Beecham House has failed to draw some of the ratings of those two aforementioned shows. Its most recent episode failed to clock more than 2 million live viewers, which puts it in our mind in some danger of not moving forward. Poldark more than doubled its ratings for its season 5 premiere and its numbers are down when compared to a number of other scripted British TV hits.
Yet, there is still some element of hope for the future of Beecham House. The series has an American broadcast still to come on PBS and if it generates enough viewership after-the-fact and overseas, there is a chance that it could come back for more. Sometimes, there is also value in just allowing a show a chance to build up an audience over time.
If there is a reason to be afraid, meanwhile, it’s that ITV may be leaning a little bit too much into period dramas in general. There have been a lot of these shows on the air in general the past few years and at a certain point, there is only so much that you can hit some of these familiar tropes before they start to get a little bit stale. At this point, it’s clear we are nearing that saturation point.
Expect a formal decision on a Beecham House season 2 to be coming over the next few weeks — content-wise, we know that we would like to see more. It’s mostly just all about whether or not there is a way for that to happen over at ITV. This is somewhat out of our purview since it’s up to whatever they decide.
