Golden Globes 2013: Amy Poehler, Tina Fey to replace Ricky Gervais
After three years of having Ricky Gervais charm and/or insult audiences at the Golden Globes, the show has now decided to go in a completely new direction.
In a new statement, NBC and the Hollywood Foreign Press have announced that for the first time, Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”) and Tina Fey (“30 Rock”) are going to be co-hosting the broadcast when the show airs on Sunday, January 13. This is easily a big gig not only for the two actresses, but also for the network, who broadcasts both of their new shows. What better way to send off “30 Rock” in its final season than by giving its leading lady and creative force an opportunity to shine? For Poehler, it’s just another reminder of how awesome she is.
Here is what the network’s head of alternative programming Paul Telegdy had to say about this choice:
“Having both Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on board to host this year’s festivities is a major coup … Tina and Amy have a proven chemistry and comedic timing from their many years together on SNL to their successful co-starring roles in Baby Mama.”
This is a big move in a new direction for the awards show, mostly thanks to all of the positive and negative buzz that Gervais drew for the show over the years. He was often criticized for being too hard on some of the people present for the show, but in comparison to Billy Crystal at the Oscars this past year, this was often in many ways preferred.
What do you think about the selection of Poehler and Fey, and do you think they will be able to bring the show up to another level even after Gervais’ exit?
