Supergirl season 5 filming underway in Vancouver; what lies ahead?

Supergirl season 3 episode 13

What lies ahead for Supergirl season 5? So many great things, and all of them can be accomplished thanks to the news today that the cast and crew are now back filming! This was confirmed by a number of different sources, most notably series star David Harewood (J’onn), who shared confirmation on his Instagram Stories that he is now back on set.

If you read our update yesterday, then there is a chance that you know of some of the finer details already. Supergirl season 5 filming is going to run from now until next spring, and it’s also starting a little bit earlier this year than usual. This may mean an earlier wrap time, or production could just be tinkered with schedule-wise to accommodate some of the craziness that lies ahead.

We think it goes without saying that the 2019-2020 season is the biggest one for the Arrowverse to date. Think in terms of all the milestones! Not only are we approaching the final season of Arrow, but we’re also going to be having five official shows with Batwoman arriving who are a part of this world. (If Black Lightning ever joins forces, that would mean six are a part of it.) For Supergirl, the show is coming back after what may be one of its best seasons, at least when it comes to establishing tension and creating an enormous, monster of a threat for all of National City in Lex Luthor. They raised the stakes and also told a story that felt true to our world today, with Agent Liberty and the anti-alien movement being at the center of it.

As we approach season 5, the primary question is this: Who is Leviathan? What are they going to mean to this story? There are ties to them and Eve but there remain many questions to be asked. (Harewood shared a photo on his regular Instagram of the cast dinner last night; there doesn’t seem to be all that much he gives away.) Expect some of the big announcements to come later this summer at San Diego Comic-Con; it behooves the network executives to get the most bang for their buck and announce most of their big reveals then … provided that they can avoid any major spoilers until that time.

Supergirl season 5 premieres on The CW this October.
