Grey’s Anatomy season 16 spoilers: What Jo’s road to recovery looks like

Grey's Anatomy

Entering Grey’s Anatomy season 16, Jo’s going to be starting things off in a very vulnerable place. While it’s wonderful to see her getting treatment after learning what she did about her biological mother, we can’t just anticipate her feeling okay when the premiere episode airs. It’d be completely foolish to predict that.

What Grey’s Anatomy will be probably looking to do in this upcoming batch of episodes and use Jo as an example of what a road to recovery can look like — with reminders that it was, in fact, a road. It’s not just some little driveway where you get in and start to feel like home.

Speaking via TV Guide, co-executive producer Elisabeth Finch explained what the show could be planning for Camilla Luddington’s character — though nothing may be necessarily set into stone just yet:

“She has not had an easy life and having this experience really fundamentally changed her,” Finch said. “So giving the space on our screen to actually show her desperate for help and needing it, and other people seeing it before she did, and then actually having her ask for help and get the help that she needs is something we don’t really get to talk a lot about on television. … We just started our writers’ room this week, but I’m really excited about honoring that and showing what it is for somebody to really go through trauma and come out the other side and have their full happy lives.”

Let’s be clear: We do think that this is not another instance of a Shonda Rhimes show trying to break your heart. We think this is meant to be a story about finding hope and darkness and realizing that you can survive. It’s obvious that Jo came from a traumatic experience, but that doesn’t have to define every part of her life. It’s one thing for us to say it, though, and it’s another thing for her to feel it. This is the sort of journey that she needs to go on, one where she starts off in a specific dark place and reaches eventually for the light on her own. She takes her power and then embraces what is around her.

Hopefully, some of her friends and loved ones, most notably Alex, continues to do the right thing and be there for her through every single step of what is sure to be a challenging journey.
