grown-ish season 2 episode 14 preview: Zoey’s job search

Next week on grown-ish season 2 episode 14, “Can’t Knock the Hustle” is bringing your way a story about career ambition — or, career ambition of a certain sort. When you’re in college, you’re in a tough spot — you want a job that coincides with your interests. Unfortunately, that’s not always available and, if it is, it may not pay. You need money to survive! There’s only so much that your family can help or is willing to help. This is where the crunch comes and we certainly applaud grown-ish for telling this sort of story with Zoey since this is a spot that many of us have found ourselves in. It’s a very relatable story in a genre where we often question whether or not certain events are plausible. It’s crazy how many comedy characters seem to live with unlimited funds — or, find a way to live in a massive apartment while working as a waitress or a part time actor (yes we are looking at the entire cast of Friends when we say that).

Zoey starts to feel the impact of her dwindling bank account. Her friends encourage her to get a job, but she struggles to find something that vibes with her career goals. Ana and Aaron consider attempting the “Shield Challenge.”

So what’s the Shield Challenge? Consider it a play on all of the ridiculous challenges that are out there — typically, a way to draw a lot of YouTube attention for yourself like the one going around right now where you let the person in front of you decide what you are going to eat for 24 hours. We were curious if the Shield Challenge is a real thing, but we can’t find any doing our actual research, so it’s probably a thing just with this show — you don’t want to build any more momentum towards some sort of real-life “Challenge,” just in fear that showing it is inspiring other people to do something ridiculous. Think of this as writer discretion.

Want some good news on the ratings?

While we know that grown-ish isn’t exactly in danger — it’s officially coming back for a third season — it’s always nice to get that extra sort of validation. That is what we’re pretty pleased about right now.

Last week’s new episode of the comedy ended up drawing a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 490,000 total live viewers. Why does that matter? It marks the best viewership by grown-ish since January, and it’s a sign that this is a series that could be keeping a lot of its audience. It may be weird to hype up cable ratings for a midseason premiere (after all, a lot of shows get a ratings bump for such episodes), but this is Freeform that we’re talking about. This is a network that loses so many viewers of its shows over time that any increase or stabilization is worth a celebratory toast in the office.
