Sneaky Pete canceled; season 4 not coming to Amazon
According to a report from Variety, the show is going to be ending its run after three reasonably-popular seasons … or so we thought. The challenge with a show like Sneaky Pete is that with Amazon being as secretive as they are with their ratings, nobody knows exactly how well it fares on the outside. (Of course, executives have a very clear idea as to how well the show fares.)
From the start, Sneaky Pete had an interesting journey to the air — it was moved over to Amazon after originally being looked at by CBS, and the show was shifted over from its original format to something a little bit more serialized. Hence, the decision to bring on board former Justified alum Graham Yost to be the showrunner for the first two seasons. It had some top-tier talent in Giovanni Ribisi on board at the forefront of the cast, and then following that Bryan Cranston as an executive producer and occasional on-screen presence.
This was a show that really should’ve been an even bigger hit than it was, but we’ll admit that we’ve been worried about it for weeks. For starters, Amazon premiered it at a very-questionable time right in the hit of the network TV season.
Is there a chance someone else could pick the show up?
We do wonder if studio Sony Pictures TV will have any interest in shopping the show around, given that a network like FX or even AMC, which certainly has a relationship with both Sony and Bryan Cranston due to Breaking Bad, would be interested in picking the show up. For now, though, that feels REALLY unlikely. We’ve seen some occasions in which streaming outlets have picked up shows canceled from broadcast and cable partners — after all, Amazon saved The Expanse after it aired for many years on Syfy.
Yet, at the same exact time we haven’t had a chance to see a network pick up a show from a streaming outlet before that had a decent run on the air. Sneaky Pete would be somewhat of a broadcast unicorn if that happened — we’d love it, but we’re not expecting all that much. We’re just going to have to accept the fact that this past batch of Sneaky Pete episode is the end. At least it’s ending with a season that was pretty solid! We personally feel like the third season was a nice step up from the second in terms of its overall quality.
