The Voice finale: About Andrew Sevener’s ‘Rural Route Raising’ original song

Tonight on The Voice finale, we’re getting a chance to hear all of the final four contestants perform their original songs for the first time! These are the songs that they may be remembered for after the show, and we hope that someday, one of these will actually turn into a massive hit.

For the sake of this article, we’re discussing Andrew Sevener and his rollicking new number “Rural Route Raising’ — it’s one that he will perform at some point during the telecast, but we’re going to spotlight it now courtesy of its iTunes recording.

It doesn’t take a lot for you to get a sense as to what Andrew’s song is about — this is very much straight-down-the-middle country, with lyrics about owning a gun, celebrating the American flag, leaving the porch door unlocked, and keeping the Bible at hand. It’s an anthem for a particular part of America, and it tells its story with a driving beat and a modern sound. It’s going to be popular and sell a number of copies. This isn’t our brand of music, but Andrew sounds strong in it and he carries the tune in a way that any modern country star does.

If there is one chief concern that we’ve got after listening to this, it’s rather simple: The song doesn’t really tell you anything about country music that you probably did not know already. It feels too much like the writing team circled every single trope and stereotype associated with the song and threw them all in here. Also, music aside, the title “Rural Route Raising” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. There had to be a way to come up with something better, and something that doesn’t sound like three words that will trip up people who try to say it out loud.

Still, we think that this is probably exactly the sort of song that Andrew was looking to put out there entering the finale, one that will play to diehard country fans — it’s really his only shot of winning, given that he entered tonight’s finale as the underdog given that he needed the Save to even be there. Beyond that, he’s up against two other country singers and we wonder if most of the votes are going to shift towards a single person rather than all three. If the votes between all three country singers are a little more split, that probably just makes it all the more likely that Maelyn Jarmon comes out of this as the champion.
