The Orville renewed for season 3! Seth MacFarlane, cast returning
After all, for most of the past 24 hours, we’d become extremely worried about the show’s future. For starters, Fox picked up a larger number of new pilots to series than we expected, and from there, they also canceled a number of other series including STAR — a show that actually had more total viewers in the 18-49 demographic did than The Orville. Also, because of the sale of 20th Century Fox TV to Disney, The Orville now comes from an outside studio, something that it didn’t before.
So what got this show renewed when easily, Fox could’ve gone the other way? A part of it may be their extremely positive relationship with star/executive producer Seth MacFarlane, as they’ve called his series Family Guy home for well over a decade. Meanwhile, another part of it may have to do with a rather-hefty tax credit the show has for a potential season 3. There’s also the critical side of things here — if you think back to the first season, this series didn’t actually get anywhere near the same sort of love from reviewers. That changed over time as the show started to find more of its voice, and season 3 became a perfectly-executed piece of science fiction that managed to balance out comedy, drama, and even romance. It wasn’t just Family Guy in space, which is what a lot of people assumed it would be going into it.
If you want to get some more evidence of the greatness of The Orville, our suggestion is to go check out the “Identity” two-parter from earlier this season or also “Lasting Impressions” — one of the best showcases that we’ve had for Scott Grimes on the show so far. Season 2 is one of our favorite seasons for ANY show in the past year so suffice it to say, we’re more than thrilled by this.

So when will season 3 premiere?
There are still many a question to wonder about that! We’re hoping that it will arrive at some point early next year, but there is no guarantee of anything given how long the show’s post-production times are. We’ll be happy if we get to see new episodes at some point in the first half of 2020 at all.
