The Orville, This Is Us, The Enemy Within, Whiskey Cavalier renewal limbo
What shows are currently still in renewal limbo, and what do we think about some of their odds? We thought that today would be a great opportunity, in the midst of all the chaos happening out there, to update the state of a few shows. All of the ones we’re discussing here are neither officially renewed or canceled at present.
The Orville – For the rest of Fox’s schedule, we’ve got a clear picture of what’s going on at the moment. Yet, there’s still mystery with Seth MacFarlane’s space show. With STAR, Lethal Weapon, Proven Innocent, and The Gifted all going the way of the dodo, that signals hope. Yet, Fox did also greenlight a number of new shows and they’re cutting down their scripted programming time. For now, we’re 50-50 still on its odds, with Hulu a possible player if it gets canceled.
This Is Us – Obviously, it’s going to be renewed. The weirdest thing about this situation is that it hasn’t happened yet. Our guess is that with 20th Century Fox TV (the show’s studio) being bought by ABC, there may just be prolonged negotiations. Beyond just that, it’s possible that there is a multiple-season renewal at play.
The Enemy Within – We were cautiously optimistic here earlier on in the season, but with ratings falling this spring despite having a great lead-in via The Voice, we’re starting to get a little more pessimistic about its future hopes. It’s still possible, but its ratings are teetering now around a 0.6 rating in the demo — not great for a first-year show.
Whiskey Cavalier – The comedic spy drama has established a loyal following, but with recent ratings in the 0.4-0.5 rating, this series seems to be primed to go the way of another underrated series in Take Two as it heads its way out the door. It would be the lowest-rated drama renewal that the network has made if it comes back, even lower than The Rookie or How to Get Away with Murder.
The Village – With its current ratings, we’d say that the show is unlikely to return; yet, NBC may have some sympathy for it as it’s dealt with a number of unfortunate timeslot shifts and it could be a solid midseason replacement once more/a good part of a Sunday-night lineup next spring.
Overall, this has been a quieter cancellation period in comparison to the last few years, especially last year when Lucifer, Designated Survivor, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine were all cut in an incredibly short period of time. STAR, at least of the current cancellations, is most likely to get a new home.
