For the People canceled; no season 3 coming to ABC
Today, the network officially confirmed this news and obviously, it’s rather unpleasant to think about. Yet, we also cannot exactly claim that this is the biggest surprise in the known for. The series has been one of ABC’s worst-performing in viewers and the 18-49 demographic, at least in terms of scripted dramas. One of the biggest things helping it has been mostly the fact that it hails from the world of Shondaland, and with Shonda Rhimes now over at Netflix, it makes sense for the network to try and keep as many different shows of Rhimes’ on the air as possible … this one just couldn’t muster it.
With this cancellation, the fate of one Thursday-night show is set, but the future of many other ones are still up in the air. Station 19 and How to Get Away with Murder are still waiting for some good news and while Grey’s Anatomy is considered to be a lock to be coming back for more, it’s still somewhat a surprise that we find ourselves in this spot with it, as well. Why can’t we got ahead and just get more announcements? Is that so bad.
While we’ve learned to take a never-say-never approach when it comes to figuring out if shows have a second life elsewhere, we do think that there is probably not going to be that enormous of a chance that we get to see a little bit more of For the People at another network/streaming service. It’s just hard to really see what the path for that is going to be or what the specific interested party would be. It would need to be somewhere that has a platform that can support it, and maybe also allow it to dive into some deeper, edgier stories — Netflix would actually be a reasonable fit thanks to the Shondaland connection there, but we don’t get a clear indication that they are looking to acquire more shows after they picked up two other canceled programs last year: Lucifer and Designated Survivor.
Just in case you are interested in getting some more finale details, be sure to check those out courtesy of ABC below:
On Election Day, Jay turns to Kate and the team for help after his parents and other voters are illegally intimidated at their polling place. Meanwhile, Roger and Jill’s relationship is at an impasse when Sandra learns that they are romantically involved and challenges Jill’s judgement. Elsewhere, Seth gets assigned to the case of a lifetime, but his anxiety increases when he is appointed a bodyguard to help protect him, all while Sandra and Ted take their relationship up a notch.
