Why is Jordan Bolger leaving The 100, & and Shaw dead?
On tonight’s season 6 premiere, the series decided that it didn’t want to hold ANYTHING back and because of that, we had our first departure — Shaw (or Zeke, depending on what you prefer to call him) is gone. Despite the attempts by Clarke to save him, nothing worked out and there’s yet another change to the fabric of a show that is clearly all about change this year. Just think about the visual changes and even the time changes. This is a different story that is going to be told this year, but unfortunately, he is not going to be a part of it.
As for the decision to kill the Shaw character off, a lot of it just comes down to the schedule. Here is what showrunner Jason Rothenberg had to say on the subject via TVLine:
“The truth is, we lost the actor … Jordan got a job on another show. He’s incredible, and I would have loved to keep him around, but we had a situation where we were losing him. The reality of production and people’s careers and people getting other jobs factors into the equation. We then have to think, ‘OK, how do we write a character off this show in an emotionally satisfying way?’ It’s not satisfying that he dies — it’s tragic and heartbreaking — but there aren’t a whole lot of options. It’s not the kind of show where a character takes a job in Seattle and moves. There’s pretty much only one way out.”
The 100 is far from the only CW show that has the struggle of trying to keep actors when there are only so many that they can contract as series regulars or have regular story for. This happens with so many of them and with so many actors being young, that only adds to some of the difficulties that they face. They’re going to be offered some other work and opportunities to do some other things.
Of course, the show does go on, and it will with a season that could easily kill off some more important players. For now, though, take a look at what’s coming in episode 2, starting with the official synopsis (if you want the promo, we’ve also got that for you on the other side):
