Santa Clarita not officially canceled at Netflix, despite rumors
Is Santa Clarita Diet officially done at Netflix after three seasons? That seems to be the hot rumor at the moment, but for the time being this show about cannibalistic undead is not officially in the ground.
According to a new report from TVLine, no firm decision has been made on the Drew Barrymore – Timothy Olyphant series, which was one of the streaming service’s big-ticket comedies at the time it first launched. This is a show that does have a devoted following (including us!), and while we do think that season 3 was the weakest of the bunch, we’re still talking about one of the funniest shows, pound for pound, on all of television. It does still have an audience out there and we think it’s worth keeping around if at all possible.

So why are there rumors about the show’s cancellation if nothing has been decided? There could be a source or two out there saying so, but we’d caution you in that some shows that have been subject to such chatter have found their way out of it. Remember when there was talk that Fuller House season 4 could be the final season? That show managed to end up coming back for a fifth and final season. We do think something similar could happen here — with the premise for Santa Clarita Diet being so crazy, we don’t think this is the sort of show meant to last longer than four or five seasons anyway. Yet, with season 3 ending the way it did, that’s a really enormous cliffhanger and not one Netflix would really want to end on. There will be a lot of salty viewers and we will be at the top of that list.
With this in mind, our proposition is simply this: If you’re not going to give Santa Clarita Diet a full season 4, why not just give it a four or six-episode final season to at least tie up your loose ends? Netflix does need to work these days on trying to get some viewers believing in them in terms of their ability to finish what they start. They have been canceling far too many shows as of late, and that’s something that is bound to make a lot of viewers frustrated. Just think about what happened to Daredevil and One Day at a Time, two other high-profile to have been given the ax.
We’ll let you know if there’s some more news out there on the future of Santa Clarita Diet. What we know at the moment is this — we need more Sheila, Joel, hijinks, and potentially Mr. Ball-Legs (but we don’t need to see its eyes ever again, we promise you that).
