NCIS: New Orleans season 5 episode 17 review: Pride’s Apollyon decision

NCIS: New Orleans season 4 premiere

After several weeks off, tonight NCIS: New Orleans season 5 episode 17 reintroduced a name that we haven’t quite heard for some time now: Apollyon. What do we know about them? Well, for starters, that this group has a knack for causing a lot of trouble. They’re as dangerous a group as they come, especially when it comes to Walker, the one identified villain at the heart of the group.

At the start of the episode, we learned from Pride that his new job was going by the wayside — yet, what he came to realize in this episode was that there were some other plans for him. To be specific, he got an offer to join a special task force in order to take this group down head-on. Doing so would have its advantages, including an opportunity to take down the group responsible for his father’s death. However, there were also some very-clear drawbacks here including that doing this would require Pride to have to say farewell to most of his friends and family for a while. He didn’t have to take off forever, but he’d certainly have to for a good while. The idea of this wasn’t an easy pill to swallow … but his hope to stop Apollyon made this a largely more tantalizing affair.

As for what we saw elsewhere in this episode, most of the NCIS office tonight found themselves wrapped up in one of the more bizarre cases of the season … where they would be tasked with trying to find a way to figure out what was going on in a small town. How did everyone have such nice cars? As it turns out, there was a secret meth ring going on at the old dog-food factory. This was one of those great crime-TV stories about a mysterious town with a dark secret, run by a pretty-awful dude named Larry who was intent on making his town a “good place.” Unfortunately, people died in the process and we saw NCIS do their best in order to play the role of peacekeeper.

Throughout this episode, various members of the team were captured, but the good news is that everyone ended up being okay. Yet, Larry himself was gunned down in a horribly violent fashion before the installment was over. It was seeing what happened at the end of this case that seemed to inspire Pride more to stick around — he recognized that Apollyon was an enormous threat, but his old team needed him and so did his friends and family. They’ve given him enough information to help on the ground level … you just gotta hope that this is going to be enough to turn the tide and change the narrative when it comes to these crooked people and their habit of ruining life.

CarterMatt Verdict

Overall, NCIS: New Orleans season 5 episode 17 brought you another edition of what matters most to Dwayne Pride, and it’s always going to be family first — maybe that means his blood relatives, or maybe that means his team. We don’t see his decision at the end of this (very entertaining) episode to be a sign that his time chasing Apollyon is over; now, we’re just jumping forward to whatever the next phase of the show is going to be with Dwayne (hopefully) being more involved directly with the rest of the group.
