Law & Order: SVU season 20 spoilers: Titus Welliver returning for finale
In a new post on Twitter, executive producer Julie Martin confirmed that Titus Welliver will be returning to the NBC show for the final episodes of the season as Rob Miller, the awful attorney with a history of corruption — let alone the assault committed against Nikki Staines. Benson, with some help from Chief Dodds, was able to find a way to pin him down and get him arrested … but he did threaten to wreck a whole lot of havoc in the process. Think in terms of Dodds’ memo, which had the potential to undermine Benson’s effectiveness at her job. Luckily, that never happened, and Dodds even went as far as to come clean about it to her and show her the actual memo.
So what can Rob Miller really do now? Well, Martin’s tweet of “watch your back, Lieutenant Benson” strongly indicates that one way or another, he’s going to try and find a way to destroy her. Maybe that means search for a way to hurt and decimate her entire career … or maybe that means trying to plant some false accusations. We figure that at this point, though, there’s nothing that Miller would avoid since he’s desperate, angry, and out for revenge. He’s going to try every trick in the book and Benson better hope that she can find a way to withstand this. Think in terms of all of her know-how and a solid legal team.
We, obviously, don’t want to see Benson struggle — she’s the heart and soul of this show! Yet, we recognize the importance of good drama and it is abundantly clear at this point that Welliver brings that to the table. He’s an outstanding actor who plays evil really well, and he’s also outstanding over on Bosch. This show is lucky to get him for a few episodes this season; it’s rare in general to have a Big Bad sort of figure on SVU just because this show is SO procedural. When you do get someone who sticks around, that adds a little bit more weight both to them and also the entire narrative around them. We’re gearing up for some powerful stuff … think stories that have you worried, but also hopefully crises that Benson can conquer.
The finale for SVU season 20 will be arriving on NBC this May. While there is no firm news at the moment regarding a season 21, we’re crossing our fingers and hoping for the best. Maybe you could create a cliffhanger on the other side of everything that goes down within these final episodes, but we don’t really think that this is the sort of show that really requires that. SVU often can deliver a lot of great stuff on its own without the help of something like a cliffhanger to keep viewers on board.
