How The Good Doctor, The Orville, New Amsterdam show DVR strength
What we want to do for you within this article is give you a good sense of some of the shows that are packing the biggest DVR punch these days — and we’re referring to some live+7 DVR data (which basically means viewership of a show on the day and a week after the fact) that was released (per TVbythenumbers) for the week of March 4. It tends to take a while to process DVR data, hence why we’re just finding out ratings information for some of these shows now.
This Is Us – For any show to more than double its 18-49 viewership with DVR viewing alone is phenomenal — for it to be one of the most-popular shows on TV in the first place is awe-inspiring. The March 5 episode went from a 1.7 rating in the demo to a 3.5. Certainly impressive given how much this show has that “watch now” feeling to it where you’re afraid someone is going to spoil something for you.
The Good Doctor – Meanwhile, the Freddie Highmore series continues to be an absolute DVR beast. The March 4 episode went from a 1.1 rating live to a 2.4 rating after the fact. That’s an increase of almost 120%! Aside from shows on The CW or shows airing on Friday night, that’s the biggest DVR gain of the entire week.

The Orville – It’s absolutely a bubble show at the moment and it may end up remaining a bubble show up until May, but its March 7 episode ended up going from a 0.6 to a 1.3 rating. This is one of the reasons why it remains in contention for another season, even with a high per-episode budget and lower live ratings. It has a good tax credit to help itself out, but it could take a little bit of time before Fox figures out what to do with the show. If they don’t want us at their door sobbing in a puddle on the floor they might want to give us another season.
One of the reasons why The Orville especially is a great DVR show is that its episodes tend to be standalone in nature (save for a few crazy ones here and there), which means it’s more about savoring an experience than being bombarded with spoilers every time you watch. It’s not a you-must-watch-immediately show, though we think it’s certainly better if you do. Continued kudos to Fox for allowing this show to air longer episodes than the standard hour of TV with fewer commercial breaks wedged in between.
New Amsterdam – Its March 5 episode jumped from a 1.0 rating to a 2.1, which signals to us mostly that NBC’s Tuesday night may very well be the most-recorded night of TV for them throughout the week.
