911 season 2 episode 12 preview: ‘Chimney Begins’ + another origin

9-1-1 season 2 episode 2

Next week, 911 season 2 episode 12 is bringing you “Chimney Begins.” Think of this as a sequel to “Hen Begins” from earlier this season. Also, think of this as a great opportunity to dive head-first into who Chimney is and the path that led him to the station.

We’ll go ahead and give you the synopsis for this episode now, not that it’s going to give you all that much in the way of big-time spoilers:

Look back at how Chimney joined Station 118 and became the firefighter and paramedic he is today in the all-new “Chimney Begins” episode of 9-1-1 airing Monday, March 25 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (NIN-212) (TV-14 L, V)

So what should you expect through this episode?

1. Flashbacks aplenty – Like with “Hen Begins,” the show can’t just stay in the present; if it wants to push forward, it’s going to push back first.

2. There’s gotta be a reason for the timing – We understand that the producers probably just want to do these flashback stories, but they aren’t just throwing them at you for the heck of it. There’s a reason why we are getting them when we are and that context should be a part of this episode.

3. Were his relationships always the way that they are now? – When you’re a part of a firehouse, camaraderie is the name of the game. You don’t start off smiling and joking around with your pals! You gotta earn those bonds and in that way, this is the origin story for friendships as much as it is Chimney as a character himself.

4. Give us something we don’t know – Maybe it’s something about his family, or maybe it’s something that he did years ago that he’s kept a secret. Maybe he’s got a hidden talent like juggling or doing great celebrity impressions. (That’s unlikely, but still.) No matter what it is, we want “Chimney Begins” to be a story with multiple purposes — give us as viewers the past, and then several metaphorical signs reading “this past matters.” You don’t want this to just be a flashback episode that people skip or feels insignificant when the dust settles.

The emotional side of things

Is Chimney insecure? Think back to when he dated the thrill-seeker — why did he try to make his job out to be even crazier than it was? We know that Chimney’s got an intense, dangerous job, but we want to delve into some of his vulnerability. These “Begins” episodes are an opportunity in order to see the man or woman behind the mask. He doesn’t have the utmost confidence in everything that he does, so this is an opportunity for us viewers to take on the key role of explorer as we take a closer look at his story.

We want to understand Chimney better; after all, we love the character and are especially thrilled that he didn’t die from getting that rebar in the head.
