The World’s Best season 2 renewal: Will it happen at CBS?

The World's BestWhat are the odds of The World’s Best season 2 following the big finale on CBS tonight? Clearly, there’s a lot to discuss in this article, starting with the show’s ratings.

We’re not going to sugar-coat things here — the odds are slim at best. Despite having a fantastic start following the Super Bowl, the Mark Burnett production hasn’t been able to keep up any momentum. As a matter of fact, recent episodes have posted 0.5 and 0.6 ratings in the 18-49 demographic — for those curious, this makes it one of CBS’ lowest-rated shows save for Ransom, which airs on Saturday night. There are also some other issues here that make a renewal even harder to imagine — starting with the fact that The World’s Best is on a network with high expectations … and also probably costs a ton of money to make. Think about it — even if the entire show may have been filmed over the span of several weeks in a studio, you had to pay the judges, pay the Wall of the World, pay James Corden, and then also handle a lot of complicated visa situations getting all of these people to America. That is a lot for any one production to deal with — but it’s worth it, if your show is a smash.

Even without the heavy cost associated with The World’s Best, we still don’t think that performance-wise, this show was ANYWHERE CLOSE to the best on CBS, even if we enjoyed covering it. The biggest issue that it had was one of being too tightly-wound and over-produced. Everything was so carefully edited and the performances were so short; there was hardly any breathing room in any of the episodes! With talent competitions, it’s best for them to be light and fun; other than when James Corden was on stage, there really was not a lot of fun here.

What would we like to see, if the show comes back?

Let’s start with a little bit more humor, for starters. Then, is there a way to make it a little more interactive? Can you do live shows or something close to it? We think that a staple of successful talent competitions these days is the audience interaction. People want to be involved! They want to be a part of that sacred process! With this show, they’re left too much screaming at the judges over what they may consider to be incredibly inane decisions.

As for the contestants themselves, we’d like more in an artistic mold — think creative dancers or acts like Dundu Giants of Light. We do love the occasional singer, but the goal should be to find acts who are not on every other version of this show.
