All American episode 16 (finale) spoilers: ‘Championships’ and hardship

Next week, All American episode 16 is airing and we can go ahead and say this: It’s far from your ordinary hour of television. As a matter of fact, it’s the most important one so far! This is where you go for the gold — or in this case, go for the championship. This episode entitled “Championships” for a reason.

For any high school football player, there’s no bigger stage than this game. All eyes are on you, and not just from your classmates, your friends, and your mentors. There are people at this game that could actually determine your future — maybe a few months from now, or maybe years down the line. Everything that you know can change with just one play, one score, or one stop. It takes hard work to get there, and Billy deserves all the credit possible for that … but he’s not alone. It’s more than just a team at this point. It’s a complicated family where there is support, strength, and pain. Expect great performances from Daniel Ezra and Taye Diggs as this story ends and everything is left on the table. This is where the actors and producers and score their own version of touchdown … while also staring CW executives in the face at the same time hoping for a season 2. Probably the hardest thing entering this finale is not knowing whether or not there will be a season 2 at all.

BACK TO BASICS – Spencer (Daniel Ezra) suffers a devastating setback and gets strength from an unlikely source. Billy (Taye Diggs), while focused on the championship game, realizes that he has to face some tough truths in order to get his family back. Bre-Z, Greta Onieogou, Samantha Logan, Michael Evans Behling, Cody Christian, Karimah Westbrook, Monet Mazur and Jalyn Hall also star. The episode was written by Nkechi Okoro Carroll and Michael Bhim and was directed by David McWhirter (#116). Original airdate 3/20/2019.

What can you do to help keep All American on the air?

The #1 thing is obviously to watch the finale live, especially if you are one of those precious Nielsen families that the ratings measurement system seems to care about. That’s the way in which they measure viewership — it’s a sample and it is obviously imperfect.

Beyond that, just spread the word about how great this show is (and it really is very good!). Tell your parents, your friends, or even your teammates if you play football yourself to check it out! The more viewers get on board, the higher the odds it’ll come back for another season.

What actually may save All American more than just the live viewership is the series’ performance on Netflix. That’s what CW head Mark Pedowitz noted back at TCA, citing the past performance of some network shows on that platform. It is a perfect binge-watching show and thanks to how quickly it’ll arrive there (think later this spring), there will be a chance for it to make a splash and for The CW to see some viewership data before decision time — which we (un-affectionately) call Bloody Friday around the time of sweeps in May.
