Chicago Med season 4 episode 17 spoilers: Picking up the pieces

Both literally and metaphorically, it feels like there is no better way to describe Chicago Med season 4 episode 17 than what we’ve spelled out in the title. It’s an episode actually entitled “The Space Between Us,” but the more digging you do, the more you may realize that this is a story about dealing with hardship, relationship woes, and then also a shattering of the ambulance bay. Surprisingly, the “car crashes through a certain part of our set” storyline has been done on a number of shows over the years, but there is a certain effectiveness to it. Much of that is probably used to conditioning — we’re so used to seeing a set in a certain form that when it gets desecrated, it produced a real, emotional reaction. It makes you sad because that sense of familiarity is gone … at least temporarily. We’re sure that it will be fixed up at some point after the fact.

03/27/2019 (08:00PM – 09:00PM) (Wednesday) : When a car unexpectedly smashes through the ambulance bay doors, Dr. Choi makes some difficult decisions in an effort to save a worker trapped beneath the wreckage and April, who’s also in danger. Dr. Rhodes and Dr. Bekker tend to a patient whose best chance at survival is an extremely risky heart surgery. Dr. Charles struggles to come to terms with ex-wife Caroline’s treatment. TV-14

For Dr. Choi and April, this episode is a watershed one. True feelings often surface when there is a sense of peril, and having something like this with April involved could easily reignite emotions that are not always present. He’s a guy who often works a mile a minute; yet, in this situation he may find another gear, a way to enter doctor warp-speed to take care of the crisis before it gets worse. Meanwhile, for Dr. Rhodes and Dr. Bekker, the best thing they can hope for is that time together will heal all wounds … even though there are still some deep ones that need addressing and healing. They’re also used to working together already, so maybe being paired up is not so immediate a panacea as it would be if it was sudden and strange.

As for what’s happening within the world of Dr. Charles, there’s an obvious sadness there that forces him to look back on his past and his mistakes. In the aftermath of this though, maybe there is a sense of greater urgency with his future. This is a man with a lot of life left and a tremendous amount to give; it doesn’t have to be exclusively reserved for the patients at the hospital. There are ways for him to feed positive energy into himself and feed his soul. He just needs to realize that there will be tears along the way. His profession in no way prepares him for when things are bad in his own life.
