As a means to better kick off our analysis for what’s coming, let’s start by sharing the official Shadowhunters season 3 episode 12 synopsis right now:
Simon is determined to get rid of the Mark of Cain and, with Isabelle’s help, tries to track down New York’s oldest vampire to get more information on the mark. Now in Paris, Clary desperately tries to find an escape from her current situation. Meanwhile, with his new sense of mortality, Magnus tries to live life to the very fullest.
For Simon – Is he going to be able to get rid of Mark of Cain? It’s anything like the Mark of Cain was on Supernatural, it is going to be an enormous pain-in-the-you-know-what. Only a select few people will know any of the finer details of how to help you and even if they do, there is really no guarantee that they will actually want to help. We do love that the secret-keeper here is some sort of super-ancient/likely super-creepy vampire — it gives us a chance to explore some different mythology.
For Clary – Obviously, she’s not going to end up being the prisoner of Jonathan for the entirety of the season; yet, there’s a real question here about how long you really want to wait in order to reunite her with Jace and then some of her friends. We’d advocate for doing it soon, especially since we’re in the final stretch of episodes on Freeform. Remember, though, that the show didn’t know it would be ending in season 3 at the time in which this story was written. There may be a greater sense of patience because of that.
For Magnus – This seems to be your dose of fun for the episode, and trust us — we shall relish the opportunity to see what Magnus living to the fullest looks like. He has a larger sense of his own impending future, and in some ways, that is scary. It’s a feeling as though you could die when you couldn’t before, at least via ordinary means. He’s mostly going to be able to embrace his future now because of those who are around him — he has a chance to love and grow old with a man he loves in Alec, and also celebrate the little things in life with the rest of his friends. We want to see him out for breakfast, maybe spending some time at the movies, or maybe finding some new artistic pursuits — the sort of things that anyone in his present position would do.
