Gotham season 5 episode 8 preview: ‘Nothing’s Shocking’ … nothing at all
Harvey Bullock on Gotham is a man on an island. This is someone who was originally introduced as a key player, and a prominent member of the ensemble. His one-liners are still delightful, and we know him to be a capable player in the field as he’s smart, sarcastic, and he has friends in seedy places! You would think that in a world like this one, Donal Logue’s character would have many uses.
Yet, for some reason, Harvey and his fantastic hat often found themselves cast aside for the sake of other stories. He doesn’t have the Batman source DNA that some other characters do, and nor does he have the sort of firmly-established backstory or momentum chugging along to this point in the season. He’s still a worthwhile character, though, and that’s cause worth celebrating next week as Gotham season 5 episode 8 looks to carve some much needed time out for the man. This is when he may confront some of his past, and with that we may have a true sense of his present and his future.
“Nothing’s Shocking” is the title for this episode, and “Nothing’s Shocking” may very well be the most fitting title for Gotham as a whole. There is no twist within this dark world that could cause our hair to stand on end at this point since they’ve really set the bar high for surprising twists and turns. There was a time when Gotham pretended to be your standard crime procedural with a coat of Batman paint, but that time has long ended. Now we’re all Batman, all the time, just without the character’s name.

Bullock’s past comes back to haunt him when he and Gordon investigate two murders at Sirens. Meanwhile, Bruce and Alfred explore the tunnels beneath the city, and Penguin and Nygma’s plans to escape are thwarted by the least likely of suspects in the all-new “Nothing’s Shocking” episode of GOTHAM airing Thursday, Feb. 28 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (GTH-511) (TV-14 L, V)
This episode could be re-titled “Escape from Gotham” given the nature of the tales it plans to tell. For Bruce and Alfred, it’s about evading the hell that exists underneath the story (an end product of the “Ace Chemicals” debacle) and the pain Jeremiah tried to inflict. For Ed and Oswald, it’s all about them seeing if there is some sort of better mousetrap that they can find to get out of the city. As over-the-top as these two may have been throughout the series, they are suddenly thinking reasonable. They are pondering over a way in which to make it out of the hellhole of Gotham and into a place where more salvation is possible.
