Over the weekend, we posted a Caitriona Balfe interview feature that noted that she and Sam were going to be getting the producer credit for the upcoming season. Yet, in result of that we did get some questions from readers a little confused as to the wording — was it Caitriona only who had the role, or her and Sam both? We’d read it as both, but now Sam has retweeted a message on Twitter on the subject. Consider this further proof of the change behind the scenes.
The promotion for the two actors is something that’s been a long time coming, and Sam even hinted at it in a Twitter Q&A session following the finale. The implication was that he was looking forward to having a larger role on the series, and would even be open to directing an episode down the road. While becoming a producer doesn’t necessarily correlate to directing down the road, it does signify further that Starz and the studio Sony value Balfe and Heughan as something more than just actors. They appreciate their insight and their creative contributions.
As we mentioned in our original report on this subject, becoming producers allows Caitriona and Sam to have more input into the direction of the story behind the scenes and the final delivery of the show. While they are far from the only voices behind the scenes, this signifies that they know these characters very well and they have an opportunity to contribute more to the overall direction of the story moving forward. It’s a credit that many actors do end up receiving for a show once it delivers big ratings and it is a handful of seasons into its run. We’re excited to see what this leads to when it comes to the presentation of season 5 and 6, though it’s clear at this point that we’re going to be waiting for a while in order to see them. There is no official premiere date just yet for season 5, but for the time being our feeling is that you’ll probably see it at some point in 2020. (Given that filming hasn’t started yet, we don’t want to get too psyched about the possibility of seeing more of the show this year.)
