The Masked Singer judge Ken Jeong lands new CBS pilot

Today, the network confirmed that the former Dr. Ken and Community star has signed on for the comedy pilot The Emperor of Malibu, which is coming from Crazy Rich Asians writer Kevin Kwan. The series here is going to be focusing on Auggie, the son of a Chinese billionaire and someone who is spurring the family traditions in order to marry an American woman and live in Los Angeles. Jeong is going to be playing said billionaire (named Gerry), and we imagine that there’s going to be all sorts of funny family drama as he tries to convince Auggie that this is not the right way to live. We’re not sure how successful he will be in his pursuit.
Kwan is co-writing the pilot for this show alongside David Sangalli, and we do think that there’s potential for this show to get a series order down the line. CBS has been seeking more unique concepts in their comedy lineup, and given the pedigree of Crazy Rich Asians, it only makes sense for them to want this. They’ve also been going in a more diverse direction with a number of other shows; they’ve found great success during this TV season, for example, with The Neighborhood as well as God Friended Me, which both feature minority actors in lead roles.
The timing of this show also certainly seems perfect when you think about the current state of Jeong’s celebrity. The Masked Singer has shown itself to be a fairly enormous hit over on Fox, and one of the reasons for that is the rapport that Ken has with a number of the other panelists. We don’t think that this new show will impede Ken’s ability to do the other at all. For starters, sitcoms have fairly cushy schedules. Beyond that, it’s also likely that the second season of The Masked Singer will film prior to any fall TV series being filmed in earnest.
