Law & Order: SVU season 20 episode 15 review: Was Phoebe Baker dirty?
Following a death that was tied to a pop-up brothel throughout New York City, the SVU was tasked to work alongside Vice in order to figure out what was really going on here. This put Fin into contact with Phoebe Baker, a woman he had a history with dating back for many years. The two had a good working relationship, but that was before it started to appear as though there was something going on behind the scenes when it comes to the case. To be specific, it looked as though there was someone dirty on the inside.
At first, Fin didn’t want to believe that Baker was responsible — yet, as time went on, there was evidence pointing in that direction. Because Fin held her to such a high standard because of their history, that elevated her position to him perhaps even more than he would have anyone else. He pushed her away and started to suspect her … and it was of course after that when he learned the truth. As it turned out, Baker didn’t have really anything to do with what transpired here at all!
Instead, it was a prominent judge who was actually the one doing the secret double-dealings. His skewed, dangerous view of morality quickly was made clear in the interrogation room, and soon after that, everyone within the SVU team could breathe a little bit easier.
As for what’s happening for Fin and Phoebe…
Is there some sort of real future here? That’s a good question to wonder, mostly due to the obvious chemistry that the two of them have. The two did characters did find a way to get together at the end of the episode. They are certainly on the same page now, and we definitely do think that there is potential for them at some point down the road. Fin, at the end of the episode, admitted that he wasn’t fair to her twenty years her — he was just getting out of his marriage and he wasn’t there for her.
Unfortunately, Phoebe was seeing someone at the moment, so there’s no way for Fin to bring back a romantic spark … at least for now.
CarterMatt Verdict
“Brothel” was a story about a women in a compromised position, but there was something more here than just a story about a sex trade. This was an episode that also touched heavily on drug use, overdose, and corruption within high levels of the court. Benson tried to spread her message of hope to people who didn’t have much. Meanwhile, we had a nice bit of backstory for Fin, a character who often finds himself under the radar.
