Celebrity Big Brother 2 finale ratings down versus season 1

While the second season overall was down roughly 15% from the first go-around (which aired opposite the Winter Olympics), last night’s new episode ended up generating around a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic across its two hours. Meanwhile, the season 1 finale ended up pulling a 1.4.
So why the big decline? One of the big reasons may be increased competition. The season 1 finale didn’t have the challenge of airing opposite a huge hit like The Masked Singer, and there was also competition from new episodes of Chicago Fire and Chicago PD over on NBC. A part of it could be the players who were left. While we’d argue that eventual winner Tamar Braxton and Kandi Burruss were super-compelling television, Ricky Williams and Dina Lohan didn’t bring that much to the table save for a few moments. Meanwhile, Lolo Jones was probably one of the most-polarizing Olympians who we’ve ever seen within the world of reality television.
Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see what happens in regards to a third season — we do think that there’s going to be interest among diehard fans in another season, but there’s an interesting trade-off here. Most viewers want bigger celebrities; however, it’s hard to afford bigger celebrities without more viewers watching the show. There’s no real way to balance the two out. The best thing that producers can really hope for is that they find some celebrities who want to just play the game for the sake of playing the game and are not anywhere near as concerned with what they’re getting paid for it. That’s so much easier said than done, though. We imagine that CBS will make some sort of decision when it comes to the future of the franchise at some point later this spring.
