NCIS season 16: Could Cote de Pablo return as Ziva David?

In the closing minutes of tonight’s “She,” it was revealed that unless Ziva has a really-good imposter out there who wants Bishop to think that she’s alive, the character is still out there. She told Ellie to keep her secret for the sake of her family, and we also know that someone paid the man at the center of tonight’s episode a visit in the hospital.
We don’t think NCIS is trying to over-complicate anything here — to us, this is the show telling us that Ziva is out there.
Now, as for whether or note Cote de Pablo could actually return to play the character, that’s a little more complicated. Are we more hopeful than we’ve been since the season 13 finale? Sure. Cote has said in the past that with the right story, she would consider returning; this could end up being the right story. However, at the same time there’s no real guarantee of anything. We don’t necessarily view this ending as the producers having a locked-in plan to bring Ziva back; instead, it’s cracking the door open and them realizing potentially that they made a mistake “killing’ the character off. This gives them options; whether or not they want to take that option is firmly up to them and also Cote’s availability.
Do you bring Ziva back without Tony? That’s another question, given the fact that Michael Weatherly has another show in Bull and that’s another scheduling nightmare. You can always say that Ziva is off doing something in secret to protect Tony and her daughter, and she hasn’t actually reunited with the two of them yet. (Don’t you think Tony would’ve mentioned to someone on the team if the woman he loves, and the woman he presumed dead, suddenly found him? The only way he wouldn’t is if he was sworn to secrecy.)
In the end, we do think there’s a chance of a Ziva appearance down the line, but we’re not coming out of this episode guaranteeing that such a thing will ever happen.
