Want to know what’s next on Call the Midwife season 8 episode 6 when the installment airs on BBC One? Well, it starts with the return of Mother Mildred! The character made her first appearance during the recent Christmas Special and has been off and on virtually ever since. Given that she is at the Mother House, there’s not necessarily any reason to see her on a weekly basis. Yet, she’s obviously still involved with matters in Poplar given that she understands the importance of her presence there; also, there are many nuns and sisters there who need her help.

Mother Mildred returns and helps a docker family tackle end-stage pneumoconiosis. Lucille cares for an unmarried teenage mother who wants to keep her baby.

Just from reading that alone, it seems pretty clear why this episode is so important — it is tackling some emotional subject matter, and beyond that, we’re also going to be seeing how some characters handle Mother Mildred’s presence around Nonnatus. You don’t want to see her step on any toes and ultimately, you want her being around to serve as a pretty significant net positive. We’ll have to wait and see whether or not that ends up really being the case or not.

As for the big story here for Lucille, we hope that this is precisely what it looks to be on the surface — something that is personal, emotional, and difficult. It’s hard enough to be a parent as a grown adult; it is even harder when you are a teenager. The best thing that Lucille can really do within this situation is whatever she can in order to ensure that this young mother will have a happy life with her baby.

We’re hoping that there are a few surprises from start to finish here, but ultimately we’ll have to see what the long-lasting impact of this story is — if there is anything. We are well past the halfway point of the season and we’re going to see things likely escalate on some level from now until the season wraps. We know that there is going to be a season 9, but it remains to be seen precisely what the future holds.
