Criminal Minds

Following tonight’s finale, when will the Criminal Minds season 15 premiere date be? At present, there’s a lot of mystery on that very subject, but we are going to share with you everything we know at present.

The first thing to remind you of is that there is officially a season 15 renewal in the books — this was confirmed a little while ago, and also that this 10-episode season will be the final one on CBS. We can tell you that this is being planned to be the end of the show — nobody’s planning for another network to pick the show up, and the finale coming up for season 15 is set to be the series finale. That’s what the writers are building towards at present.

What’s also worth noting is that the final season is already in production! We’ve already seen that Jane Lynch will be returning for at least one episode as Spencer’s mother Diana and there are likely to be some other big reveals through the weeks ahead. Filming, per our recent interview with showrunner Erica Messer, is set to last until some point in May. There are some plans in the works for what will be the series finale but there’s also a good bit of time for things to change.

The premiere date mystery

Ultimately, the ball right now is in CBS’ court as to when they want the show to wrap up. They could air season 15 in the fall; presumably, they’ll have enough time to air all of it and the series finale before the end of 2019. On paper, that makes the most sense, unless of course they want to use the fall to launch a new show that has some higher rating aspirations than what Criminal Minds can bring to the table at this point.

This brings us to another option — airing the final season starting in early 2020, almost as a show to air in the midst of a hiatus for another one on the schedule. If it started in January 2020, it would be over by March. The big issue with this is that it’s a super-long wait for longtime fans to wait, especially since viewers would be waiting for a good year between seasons.

Then, there’s the possibility of this summer. Given when filming is taking place, it’s possible in theory that CBS could just roll out the remaining episodes starting in June, leading up to a big series finale in August. We think that this idea is very much on the table, and since ratings don’t really matter at this point, why keep people waiting to find out how this story wraps up!?
