Walking Dead season 8

As if there was ever any doubt, it’s now 100% official: The Walking Dead will be coming back on AMC for a season 10.

In a post on Instagram this afternoon, show executive producer Angela Kang confirmed the news by posting a super-creepy teaser. This means that the long-running zombie franchise can keep going and that the writers can continue to build the show forward with that in mind.

To date, The Walking Dead season 9 is in the midst of its lowest-rated stretch of episodes that we’ve seen so far. The show is bringing in (on average) a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic. That’s a drop of around 40% (!) versus the season 8 numbers. Yet, even with that major decline, it’s hard to call the show anything short of a success. This is the most-watched series in the history of AMC and save for Game of Thrones, there are few other programs out there that even come close to it on cable. It has the potential to go on for quite some time moving forward – even without Rick Grimes at the center of the story anymore.

While we know that losing Andrew Lincoln was not a choice made by the network itself, we also think that this may actually make the show a little easier to afford moving forward, even with new deals for cast members like Melissa McBride and Norman Reedus. We think that the network does have a plan in place to keep it financially viable, and from everything we’ve heard, there is no plan to tie up this story for several more years.

When will The Walking Dead season 10 premiere?

Think in terms of this October. That’s what the Instagram message (which you can check out below) seems to strongly indicate, and with that in mind, we’re very much of the belief that this show will continue its pattern of a fall and spring batch of episodes for a while. Even with lower ratings, there is no reason to alter that.

Beyond the upcoming season, also remember that there is still that Rick Grimes movie that is floating around out in the ether. There’s no guarantee on a premiere date for that, but we have to think there will be more updates before long.
