Outlander season 5: Why all of the secrecy for what’s ahead?

Outlander season 4

Happy Super Bowl Sunday! With the big game keeping everyone busy we’re going to pause on the Outlander character spotlight series for a week, but we do have another topic that we want to discuss in this piece … one related to the current promotional nature of what lies ahead.

Odds are, you’ve probably read an interview or two with some of the show’s cast and producers. Through that, there’s probably a clear takeaway that you’ve seen time and time again — nobody can talk about season 5. It seems to be a mandate-of-sorts from Starz to try to keep the discussion about the show’s future to a minimum, and it’s an interesting strategy.

So why try to create as much secrecy as possible to a show that is already well-known thanks to the book series? It’s an interesting thing to ponder over, and we do think that keeping spoilers at bay from non-readers is a part of it. That sounds like a strange concept to write about on the internet, where spoilers about almost everything are fairly common. Yet, we think there is a large contingent of Outlander veiwers who aren’t really on social media and also aren’t too familiar with the source material. Starz probably feels a certain responsibility to try and protect them from significant plot teases. While they are almost certainly going to find out some spoilers over time, they probably don’t want to feel responsible for most of these people learning spoiler information about the show.

Another reason why Starz may be keeping spoilers at bay, though, has to do with the fact that the series hasn’t even started filming yet; meanwhile, it’s unclear how many scripts the actors have received (if any) and also, they may not want to create a certain expectation that the season will be a linear reflection of the books. It would be easy for the cast and crew to say to read The Fiery Cross for spoilers on season 5, but we know that the show won’t be identical to the book — after all Murtagh is already dead there! Starz is probably wary to create an expectation that season 5 will be just like the book, especially since there is a contingent of fans already unhappy about the changes for season 4.

So with all of that, Starz seems to be operating with a less-is-more approach to telling the season 5 story. They know that there are going to be viewers who watch the show, and they don’t really need to set things up far in advance.
