According to Entertainment Weekly, Davidson is set to co-write and star in a semi-autobiographical comedy that is going to be filming this summer during his hiatus from the sketch show — one that will be directed by none other than comedy guru Judd Apatow. That’s a great sign for the movie’s future, even though there hasn’t been all that much said about the story or anything else just yet.
We also should note right now that this is no sign that Davidson is leaving SNL in the immediate future, mostly because it’s fairly commonplace that cast members do movies in their off months. Kate McKinnon is certainly doing it, and we’ve seen Leslie Jones and others take on the role in the past. It’s mostly the perfect opportunity to spread your portfolio around so that when you do eventually leave, you can go on to do some other things.
Right now, Davidson is an interesting commodity on SNL, mostly in that he’s far from your traditional cast member even when you exclude some of the headlines away from the show. For example, he has a tendency to excel more in comedy pieces than sketches, and he’s not afraid to open up about his personal life or use it for humor. He also embraces controversy in a way few others do, and we think that one way or another, he’ll be in the headlines even after his time on the show is over.
We are worried about some notable exits soon, mostly because SNL has been reasonably stellar with some of their bigger cast members since at least losing Bobby Moynihan from the show. Yet, there’s a chance Kenan Thompson leaves at the end of this season and we could be nearing the end of the run for at least a few others. We’d like to see most of the current cast stay for at least one more year if Kenan does leave this spring, mostly because it would give the show a chance to stabilize without one of its biggest captains.
