Manifest season 2 renewal: What is NBC waiting for?

Late this past week, CBS made a bold move in deciding to issue renewals for some of their new shows including Magnum PI, The Neighborhood, and FBI. This is a great decision by the network, mostly because of the fact that it allows fans of these three shows to be confident over the future. They don’t have to wait around and wonder about anything and that’s a great place for any TV viewer to be in.

Now, we’re hear to wonder a rather-simple question in relation to NBC’s Manifest — why hasn’t there been an official announcement on its future yet? We’re talking here about one of the most-watched and most-popular new shows out there, especially when you factor in some DVR ratings after the fact.

When you look at things in terms of live ratings alone, there is no question that Manifest has experienced a drop over the past several weeks. It is no longer the same enormous machine that it once was. Yet, at the same time it’s still doing an incredible job generating attention and buzz for itself, and also creating a fantastic central mystery that is getting more and more complex over time. This is the sort of show that NBC had to be craving before the start of the season — one that would generate social-media discussions, theories, and also reactions from all across the web. They’ve done a great job cultivating one in This Is Us, and it only makes sense that they find a way to bring another to the table here, as well.

So why haven’t they renewed Manifest just yet? It’s probably just a product of negotiations. NBC doesn’t have full ownership of the series and with that in mind, sometimes it takes a little bit longer to check off every box. They also may want to see the performance of the rest of the season, but we don’t think that this is really going to have all that much of a bearing on the future of the show. Manifest is a lock for renewal; the one thing that we would recommend if we were NBC is just finding a way to get the renewal out there before the season finale ends. That offers up some confidence so that viewers have nothing to worry about; after all, we’d be shocked if there isn’t a cliffhanger at the end of this season. This is the sort of show that just begs for one more often than not.
