Magnum PI, FBI, and The Neighborhood season 2 renewals official at CBS

The Neighborhood season 1

Today, we come bearing some great news when it comes to a trio of freshman shows on CBS! FBI, The Neighborhood, and Magnum PI are all coming back for additional seasons.

In a statement confirming this news, CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl had the following to say:

“Each of these distinctive shows has made their mark in a variety of ways … Our goals this season were to introduce new series that audiences are passionate about, add more strength to a winning schedule and create more inclusive programming.”

With that statement in mind, it is worth noting that all three shows mentioned here feature at least one non-white lead — something that was a little more rare with CBS in years past.

Now, let’s break the renewals down a little bit further:

Magnum PI – Of the three shows, this is the renewal that we are the happiest about — and, ironically, it was also the one we were the most concerned about. The ratings for season 1 have not been necessarily spectacular on Monday nights, and while it did deliver some super-impressive numbers following the AFC Championship Game, it went back to its typical ratings almost immediately after that. We just had a hard time really knowing what the expectation was here for CBS, even though we are fairly confident when we say that this is a show that is going to deliver in a pretty-big way when it comes to DVR figures and also international sales down the line.

FBI – Meanwhile, this one felt a little bit more like a slam dunk at the network. It managed to keep a solid percentage of both the demo and also total viewers from the aforementioned show. Not only that, but it does also have a procedural format that CBS really likes — it is going to be able to maintain most of its viewers (and possibly find new ones) for many years to come and that’s something that the network, more than likely, cares about very much.

The Neighborhood – While the freshman comedy series doesn’t necessarily generate a ton of press, it did find a stable audience for itself on Monday nights. CBS is entering a period of great flux when it comes to some of its comedies, as The Big Bang Theory is ending and the status of Mom remains unclear due to some contractual matters behind the scenes. with this in mind, the network did have to find a way to stabilize a few things and it seems as though they have figured that out here.
