The Punisher season 3: Jon Bernthal on series’ uncertain future

Punisher spoilers

The Punisher season 2 is now available on Netflix, and there’s definitely a lot to be excited about in terms of the story there! Yet, at the same time, there’s also something else to be rather-sad about: The uncertainty over the future at the moment.

There is no season 3 renewal at the moment for the Marvel adaptation, and if you’ve been reading a lot of headlines as of late, there’s a reason to be worried. We’ve already written about how the cancellation of Daredevil and others make us very concerned over the series’ future, largely because it’s so difficult to really imagine the Marvel – Netflix pact suddenly turning around now that the bulk of the shows shared between them are over. We want to see this show continue, and we do also want to see Jon Bernthal continue to play Frank Castle.

Unfortunately for him, though, it’s out of his hands. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor explains his philosophy on the idea that he may never get to play this particular character again:

There’s so much about this business that you just never know about, and I try to live my life only worrying about the things that I can control. When I have a job, I put absolutely everything that I have into making it the absolute best that I can, but in order to do that, I have to waste no energy hoping or caring or even thinking about things that I can’t control. It’s a character that’s existed for decades, it’s a character that has touched so many people, and it’s a character that’s resonated in the law enforcement and military community. It was an absolute honor to play him, and I know that there will be more Frank Castle one way or the other, and no matter what it is, everything that I’ve gotten to do so far, I’m eternally grateful for. I’m honored that I got to wear the vest.

Ultimately, we don’t think that Netflix is going to make anyone wait too long in order to learn the future of this show — there’s no reason for that if they do decide to end the show. They’ll probably wait a couple of weeks so that the attention is on the show itself and not anything else. We’d love to envision a situation where it comes back for more, but we’re doubtful for now. At the moment, we should just feel happy that The Punisher even exists in this form. It’s certainly a character that wouldn’t even have a television show ten or twenty years ago. Netflix did give it an opportunity, even if we’ve been bummed by the recent Netflix cancellation.
