The first thing that we should note here is that both the host and musical guest tonight are green to the SNL world and with that, there could be some growing pains. Do they each have potential? The promo below is absolutely hopeful, mostly because it seems like Rachel (and even the band) have some chemistry with host Aidy Bryant.
One of the obvious things that SNL is probably going to do tonight is spoof The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in some capacity, which may be a challenge for some viewers given that only a certain percentage of the audience may be altogether familiar with the show. It’s the same as when any other show is spoofed, and it’s hard for the show to avoid it when this is mostly Brosnahan’s claim to fame.
Beyond that, the best thing that Rachel can do as a first-time host is to not take on too much. Play some fun characters here and there, but also be cool to be a background player in a sketch or two. We think that Claire Foy set a really good standard for how to be a first-time show; Jason Momoa was a little bit of an opposite extreme, where some of his swings hit big and some other ones were a little too much.
Will we get a Donald Trump cold open?
In the end, we don’t really think that it matters all that much so long as there is some sort of government shutdown sketch — it feels inevitable that we’re going to get something like that given the headlines of the past several weeks. We did think it’d be rather ironic if SNL planned to do some sort of shutdown sketch only for it to be resolved at the very last second, but that seems unlikely at the moment.
We do think that there are times in which SNL has suffered from some political-sketch overkill. Yet, at the same time it’s been so long since the last episode that the show can really dive into some of this and do some really special stuff … as long as it’s creative.
