Are there plenty of former hosts we’d love to see? Absolutely. Think along the lines of Jessica Chastain, Tiffany Haddish, Kumail Nanjiani, Melissa McCarthy, Dave Chappelle, and of course the subject of this article in Dwayne Johnson.
Of course, we should make it clear that Johnson doesn’t necessarily ever have to host again to have a great SNL career — he’s already in the five-timers’ club and because of that, he’s already among some of the series’ elite hosts. You don’t get invited back to do this on multiple occasions unless you are someone who Lorne Michaels and the producers really believe in.
So why do we need Johnson back now? Well, it has to do in part with his talent, given that he’s done some really amazing stuff on the show over the years. We actually think back to his fourth hosting gig specifically, as it was one of the funniest episodes in recent memory. The wrestling bit he did with Bobby Moynihan was gold, but he also had a particularly memorable / ridiculous Indiana Jones spoof with Pete Davidson and Kate McKinnon.
What Johnson does is prove SNL with a big, bold presence, and someone who is not afraid to make fun of himself or get really into characters. He can do physical comedy, but he’s a strong-enough actor to get just really weird and take on people who are a little more vulnerable and insecure. His appearances are a reminder of why he’s such a box-office draw — it’s in part the charisma, and the way he brings people into whatever he’s doing.
Of course, there’s another obvious reason now in the synergy element of it. Johnson is currently a part of The Titan Games, and this could be cross-promotion that doesn’t feel overly obnoxious. It’s just a way for NBC to take advantage of some talent that is already available to them, which is why it’d be great to also get Andy Samberg back as a host down the line. We imagine that he’s still probably busy right now with Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but he should really be considered for the gig a little bit later this spring when filming wraps up.
