In some ways, we recognize that it’s hard to even fully consider MacGyver to be a bubble show for a number of different reasons — with the biggest one being the simple fact that it’s been incredibly steady throughout the season. Yet, we do have a tendency to proclaim the lowest-rated show on any lineup to be on the bubble, and MacGyver currently does fit that bill for CBS on Friday nights. To date, the series is averaging a little over a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic and also over 6 million live viewers.
Is this show the same sort of hit that Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods are? No, but at the same time it’s hard at present to be convinced that it is in serious danger. There are a number of different things, after all, that you do need to consider at the moment. Let’s start off with the fact that it is airing opposite Friday’s #1 show in Last Man Standing, and also airing on the most-difficult night of the week in general. Also, MacGyver compliments the other shows on CBS very well and has provided some much-needed stability at a time in which the network really covets it. Just remember that it’s been a really long time since we’ve seen CBS do particularly well in this timeslot with virtually any other show that they have there.
Also, you have to think just beyond the live+same-day numbers for the series’ overall impact. MacGyver is a big franchise name that can sell and perform well overseas, and it does also have an audience that will watch and stream it after the fact. It’s just got money-making avenues and potential that a lot of other shows out there just don’t have, and we do think that this is something that CBS does consider as it looks towards the future. We do think that the network would like to get it past the syndication threshold, which it will be at least a little bit closer to doing if they give it a renewal for another season now.
Is there any cause for concern?
Maybe, since the series is going to have to adapt to losing George Eads based on the rumors that are out there. Yet, we do feel confident that it is going to find a way to do that and continue to generate some strong ratings and have a diehard audience backing it up. This is a show that has already shown that it can be flexible already; think about what happened with Thornton’s departure in season 1 or the abrupt end of Samantha Cage’s story in season 2.
