This morning, the fine folks at Showtime released a new promo chock full of some interesting teasers and things to expect from this upcoming batch of episodes. (You can watch it over here.) The first thing worth noting here, at least in our mind, is that this episode offers up a chance to see a little bit more of Fiona on her downward spiral. She’s been struggling mightily as of late to find her way in the world after losing everything, and it does quite seem like that spiral is going to stop anytime soon. Are some of her fellow Gallaghers going to do their best to be there for her? Absolutely, but it doesn’t seem as though there is much of a hope that they’ll be successful. If Fiona wants to get out of this situation, she’s going to have to figure it out herself.
Because of Fiona’s crisis, we’re also in an interesting spot where Debbie is suddenly one of the most responsible people in the family. Given her age, how did this come about?
What is Frank up to?
Basically, more of the same — creating dysfunction and delusion at every turn. He still favors get-rick-quick schemes over almost anything else that he does and beyond just that, he’s taking his relationship with Ingrid to the next level and also to an especially-weird place in the process, one where he seems to think that the two of them could actually be good parents. Why in the world would he think this was possible? Has there been a single thing that he’s really done to inspire confidence in this belief? More than anything, we’ve just seen perpetual delusion from this guy.
While Shameless does not have Ian as a major character anymore, rest assured that the second batch of episodes for this season will feel a lot like it always has — even if there will be a void there. We just hope the show does move things along quickly, given that we are losing Emmy Rossum at the end of the season and we hope that there’s enough ground covered between now and the finale so that this makes sense.
