Vikings season 6 to reportedly be final season; sequel in development
According to a new report from Deadline, the network is going to be saying goodbye to the show after it has been a flagship drama for them. Vikings is a show that changed the course of some of the network’s programming, and the ratings have allowed it to grow and become even more immersive over time. It’s also a series that took some particularly enormous risks, including writing out its original lead in Travis Fimmel. (That’s the thing about a series based on history — it has to be realistic, and there was a certain ending to Ragnar’s story that had to be achieved here.)
Vikings is currently in its fifth season at History, and there’s still no precise schedule for the remaining episodes. There are still twenty episodes to go of Vikings, but there are still some questions as to whether or not they will air these installments as one continuous batch or in blocks of ten with a lengthy wait in between. That’s the weird thing about this series right now — they are FAR ahead of where the show is right now in terms of their filming schedule.
Disappointed in this news? Well, here is the silver lining. The site also reports that History is in the process of talking with creator Michael Hirst and MGM Television about a sequel series that will continue the Viking story in some shape or form. If this project moves forward, Hirst (who shockingly writes every episode of Vikings) would be joined by Jeb Stuart. There’s no guarantee that this comes together, but we do think that there’s going to be a real push for more of this show as History continues to try and stabilize its scripted lineup. They are working on building and giving its readers more projects — that includes Knightfall, which is coming soon with its second season, and then also Project Blue Book, which is premiering a little bit later this month.
Ultimately, this outcome for Vikings itself was fairly expected given that there had been no news about a season 7. Meanwhile, it’s certainly possible that some of its current cast will go on to do some other projects. Katheryn Winnick, for example, already has a new gig in Wu Assassins.
New episodes of Vikings can be checked out on History Wednesday nights. Of course, stay tuned — we’re going to have some more insight on the series the moment that we’ve got it. Be sure to stay tuned for some other updates.
