Blindspot season 5 renewal odds: The latest Ratings Bubble Report
We think that if you’re reading this article, there’s a pretty good chance you’re pulling for a season 5 of the Jaimie Alexander series — why wouldn’t you be? This is an immersive world with memorable characters and certainly, it’s easy to imagine a world in which there are a number of additional stories to tell.
Then, you look at the ratings and you have to realize at that point that the series is in trouble. To date, season 4 is averaging a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic (down more than 20% versus season 4) and 2.64 million viewers (down about 19%). These are not great numbers, even on Friday nights. It is clear at this point that this is a highly-competitive timeslot, mostly because you’ve got this year MacGyver there alongside Last Man Standing — which both perform a little bit better than Blindspot does.
So what’s the good news and bad news to go along with this?
The good news – Blindspot is a show with a sizable DVR audience and there are a number of people watching and/or streaming after the fact. It’s the sort of show that you want to watch quickly after it airs, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re watching it live. NBC will at least take some of the show’s numbers across the board into consideration.
The bad news – This isn’t a series that NBC / Universal has full ownership in, and we are in an era now where that matters significantly to shows looking to stay on the air with declining ratings. There may not be a financial incentive for the network to keep Blindspot around with the ratings that it is currently different — they just canceled Midnight, Texas, and that was an in-house production with ratings that were only slightly worse than what Blindspot‘s are in live+same-day viewing.
What viewers can do
Just watch the show and try to find the way to move the needle + get some more attention on it. We do think that it will be helped in the new year by airing alongside The Blacklist. These shows do have similar audiences and we do think that creating a lineup that is based on the same subject matter could push both shows closer to a renewal. (It’s a little too early to talk about The Blacklist in this feature, mostly because we haven’t seen any of the ratings just yet.)
Given that NBC may not make their decision on the future of Blindspot until May, that does leave plenty of time for fans to convince NBC to keep it around.
