Doctor Who season 12 will premiere ‘very early’ in 2020

While it’s true that you are going to have to wait until 2020 to see more Doctor Who on television, there is a silver lining here — apparently, they will be showing up sooner rather than later.

While speaking at a special preview screening of Resolution recently (via Digital Spy), BBC Director General Tony Hall made it clear that season 12 for the show will be airing on BBC One “very early” on in 2020. That may mean that the wait for the new season is a little bit less insufferable than it could’ve otherwise been.

As for precisely some of what we could be seeing on the upcoming season, we definitely don’t think that it’s out of the realm of possibility that the show decides to give us a little bit more nostalgia. It feels a lot like one of the main focuses of season 11 was to bring you a lot of notable stories featuring new characters, almost as a way in which to ensure that Doctor Who was presenting itself to a new audience. Now, we think there’s a little bit more of a comfort level and that is something that the show can use to its advantage moving forward.

In a perfect world…

Maybe we would see Doctor Who season 12 begin on the first Sunday of 2020, coming mere days after another New Year’s Special or at least some sort of other holiday-themed event for the show. The earlier that the network puts the series back on the air, the better that it will probably be for them in the long-term. It does, after all, benefit them rather significantly to have this show come on at a time in which there will be a large pool of viewers around. What better time is there than the winter, when it is really too cold to go outside and do a lot of things?

Of course, we don’t expect any official announcement on a Doctor Who season 12 premiere date for some time, largely because there’s really no reason to do that. Instead, we think the series will take its time filming some new episodes throughout 2019 and focus more on the return date when they get into the fall. There’s no real need to hurry anything along for now!
